Amsterdam Teachers' Association: Building Our Future Together
Amsterdam public schools play a vital role in preparing students to become active and informed participants in the world. As educators, our obligation is to help students of all backgrounds learn to work together, understand each other, take personal responsibility for their community and become better citizens. Schools are places where our students can share ideas, challenge established thought and construct new meaning as they better understand the world around them. As educators, we must support this learning with a solid foundation, and an open mind towards new solutions, recognizing that we are preparing students for a world we do not yet know. We believe that the true purpose of public education is to create life-long learners. Fulfilling this purpose means creating experiences that are challenging and rewarding. As educators, we recognize that a quality education does not look the same for every student. Each student comes to us with unique strengths and needs. We work to honor their differences and nurture their compassion for others, while providing them an opportunity to fully develop their potential.
Community Connections:
- Community involvement in our schools provides needed support for students and their families.
- Communities fact many societal challenges and by parenting with schools, the responsibility for resolving them can be shared.
- A relationship with community partners connects students to their hometown and teaches students that their community values education.
- These partnerships can provide students with real opportunities to apply what they have learned, help to develop stronger community
relationships and foster respect.
Student – Staff Connections:
- The most important work in public education occurs in the classroom between staff and student.
- Building this relationship must be valued and nurtured by the school community.
- Because learners are different, all staff members bring a variety of educational experiences and techniques to best meet the students’ needs.
- We match these skills with a deep concern for students’ progress and well being.
The Amsterdam Teachers’ Association is a powerful force for justice, change and democracy. We take pride in:
- Striving to deliver excellent education to our students
- Promoting safety in our learning environments
- Reaching out and supporting family and community needs
- Continually assessing changes in the field and how it impacts our students and staff
- Continuing to build open dialogue with administration and jointly moving forward to improve education in Amsterdam
